BOTANICAL PRINTS                                            on cotton and clothing upcycling
Saturday, March 15
10 am to 3:30 pm
Guaynabo

This technique of printing leaves on the textile surface uses 6 fundamental elements to achieve a transfer of color and organic shapes. We will work with these elements based on the dyeing potential of specific leaves collected or harvested from our environment to print on a cotton scarf and modify a piece of your closet or home.

INDIGO SHIBORI UPCYCLING                          cotton scarf and clothing
Saturday, March 29
10 am to 4 pm
Guaynabo

Unlike other dyeing processes, this pigment goes through a chemical transformation where it becomes a water-soluble dye and the blue only emerges (in the textile) when it comes into contact with oxygen. To achieve deep and bright blues, multiple submersions in the color vat are required, interspersed with oxygenation times.

Apart from dyeing white pieces, existing pieces can also be over-dyed to give them new life. In this workshop we will do both applications: a white scarf and a piece of clothing that you bring from your closet/home.

NATURAL DYEING                                              with native trees
Saturday, April 5
10 am to 3:30 pm
Guaynabo

In this introductory workshop on natural dyeing we will use several native trees: button mangrove, star apple and/or mahogany, with some indigo dips. We will work with itajime shibori to preserve previous colos and create new layers of color and shapes.

We will demonstrate the mordanting and color extraction method, make a sample piece on cotton and dye a silk scarf sized        11″ x 60″.

About Gladys

Hello!
I am a textile artist and educator from Puerto Rico passionate about natural dyes and paints, textile construction, screen-printing and other surface design mediums.

In 2011 I launched Superficies Textiles, a unique workshop program for the general public, with the mission of promoting textile surface design where students could learn the techniques while creating projects and wearable pieces. It was also intended for people wanting to create their own line of one-of-a-kind pieces or small-scale production.

Alongside teaching workshops, I have spent the last 11 years on the TENAPURI Project (Teñido Natural en Puerto Rico). I have been able to work on various methods of extracting dyes from plants and trees, mostly native to the island. On this extensive journey, each plant and tree has shown me its unique dyeing qualities, as well as the appropriate extraction methods taking into account the seasons and several other things to consider.

I am working on putting my explorations together and sharing them soon!!
